Commonly Reported Repairs
As a Porsche owner, you already know what an exceptional car line is. However, any vehicle needs occasional repairs, and every manufacturer sees a few issues more frequently reported than others. When choosing a Porsche, you may hear about the following four problems among the more common repairs.
Perhaps you’ll learn there are engine troubles. Most of the power plants are, of course, fine. Even so, one repeated complaint is engine smoking, particularly in the 911 and Boxster. The culprit? It’s usually the result of an improperly trained mechanic overfilling the oil supply during an oil change. If this is the case, the smoke may appear ominous, but it’s fairly harmless. It is, however, possible to have smoke resulting from a bad oil separator, especially in the 986 or 996.
Another reported engine issue is an intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing failure in those same numbered models. Also, a stretched timing chain can become a problem. It’s known to cause catastrophic engine failure and is sometimes noted in the Cayenne. Shifting gears to the transmission, if you notice a grind when changing speeds in your manual model or the car won’t go into gear, you likely have worn synchros.
Some models and years are prone to cooling system trouble. You may need to reseal the coolant distribution pipe on a Cayenne or Panamera. The older Boxster is also susceptible to coolant expansion tank cracking. Further, some models display the ABS warning, yet the real trigger is not the brakes. It’s the ABS electronic module that will then need replacing or, in some cases, rebuilding.
Last, you know that the heavy demands you place on your Porsche suspension can prematurely wear on the CV joints. That’s a consequence of the driving style you likely love given your choice of cars. Be aware, and monitor the DV boots for tearing, cracking, and leaking of grease.
