Typical Troubles
Most Porsche owners grew up admiring the car line as one of the finest (and “hottest”) available. Those who didn’t likely quickly discovered the manufacturer’s greatness soon after seriously thinking through purchase options. Even legends like Porsche have a few common issues. All car lines have such glitches.
For this particular company, there are four typical complaints. Even though most engines perform very well, some owners have noticed smoking, especially in the Boxster and the 911. Most often, this is the result of a technician who isn’t familiar enough with the Porsche overfilling oil after a lubricant change. The great news is that smoking, for this reason, is normally harmless. Don’t ignore it, however, because smoke can also appear if your car (particularly the 986 and 996) has a bad oil separator.
The IMS (intermediate shaft) bearing can also fail in the 986 and 996. Additionally, your car may develop a stretched timing chain. Due to the work of this chain and the importance of timing, engine failure could result. This is most often a problem for the Cayenne.
If you sport a manual model, a car that won’t go into gear or grinding when changing gears may signal transmission trouble in the form of worn synchros. Also, some Porsches develop cooling system problems. The Cayenne and Panamera sometimes need a reseal for the coolant distribution pipe. Similarly, the older Boxsters are more prone to cracking the coolant expansion tank.
On some models, because the brake light is on, there appears to be a brake issue. This is actually a bad ABS electronic module that needs rebuilding or replacing. Finally, monitor CV boots for grease leakage, tears, and cracks because Porches sometimes exhibit early CV joint and suspension wear due to the high demands of performance driving.
